make sure a few of them are dirt.”

So, if you don’t want to run, but you still want to get out and get some good exercise in our amazing trails (having fun, of course), then come hiking!

Hiking (aka walking/strolling fast/hanging out outside with your friends with your legs moving quickly in a general direction and looking at pretty trees and views) is a fantastic way to get moving and build a healthy and strong fitness level.

The benefits of hiking are very similar to those of running, such as building a strong heart, a strong body and a strong mind.

According to many scientific studies on the human mind, outdoor exercise is linked to feelings of positivity and revitalization by decreasing tension, anxiety and depression and replacing them with feelings of wellbeing.

For me, getting outside after a day at the desk feels like I’m pushing a reset button – like everything gets left out on the trails and you come back to your life with new energy. I think it’s a combination of the extra oxygen in the air, the soothing sights and sounds, the rich green colours – all of it just calms me down and I know it does the same for many others. All this positive energy is made even greater by sharing it in the company of others! I feel like there are few things greater than trekking with a gaggle of humans in dark, beautiful forests and listening to the laughter and chatter of new and old friends. There is a safe feeling in the trails, like the trees are holding all the secrets, which makes people feel they are able to have real and honest conversations and bond with their fellow hikers. Conversations about everything from where they are in their lives, to where they have been, to what the heck they should make for dinner. Everyone feels the joy and the contentment out on the trails, which is why the hikers are always coming back for more.

The hikes are held in different locations around town and I will be putting out a schedule of where we meet for the first few weeks on the Facebook page. For now the hikes will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:45-6PM starting March 7th! Starting the first week in May we will be doing longer hikes on Saturday mornings, which are the really fun ones! These are the hikes where we get to really stretch our legs and do some great adventuring around, checking out sections of the Sunshine Coast trails, BC bike race trails and maybe even a hike up Tin Hat this year! The price for hiking will be two hikes per one class pass.

Let me know if you are keen to try the hikes and I will put you on the list.

On a side note, many people ask if they can bring their dogs on the hikes and trust me, I love dogs and wish we could bring them all! But I have had issues with dogs joining us in the past (knocking people over, fighting, getting lost and once a dog even caused us to cut the hike short…not fair to fellow hikers) and it’s best to just leave them at home for this one. Maybe somewhere down the road we will start a second “dog friendly” group.

We can’t wait to have you come out and join us! If you have any questions, feel free to contact me and I will answer whatever questions you have.
